One Man's Leg

One Man's Leg
This book is a must-read for anyone that has gone through a tragic event, rough time, or is feeling sorry for themselves. It puts life into perspective and shows that there is always someone worse off than you, no matter how tough things get. It shows that you can laugh at yourself no matter what, and provides insight to the strength of the human spirit.
Paul sets the example that you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to.
Inspirational!!!

Inspirational...
I usually don't get into books like this but I read a review on this one and had to check it out...and I was not disappointed. This is a great book for non-athletes and athletes alike. It really shows how someone can change their lives and become great in whatever they decide to focus their energies on regardless of the barriers in the way.

At times the book seems somewhat self-indulgent...but if it was my book I'd do the same...overall it's a great book and recommend it!

One Man On a Mission
One Man's Leg shows the strength of the human spirit, and the determination of one man in particular. But rather than bludgeon us with a tale of dark adversity and eventual triumph, this book delights in its accessibility and humanity. Paul leads us through his life and evolution with humility and honesty, and writes in a natural prose that inspires genuine identification with him as a person first, and an amputee secondarily.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone at any stage of life, for both a delightful read and a reminder that humans are capable of great things if we only rise to the occasion.

The Patton Papers 1940-1945
Published in Hardcover by Replica Books (2003)
Authors: George S. Patton and Martin Blumenson
Average review score:

Exciting Fast Paced Biography That Reads Like A Novel
Martin Blumenson's has created a fascinating and surprisingly readable biography of the World War II hero, General George Patton. Blumenson has taken the General's diaries, personal and official letters and combined them with letters written to him and newspaper articles written about him. These are arranged in chronological order.

The period covered by this book was the most active of Patton's lifetime. In the last three years of his life, Patton had adventures enough for several lifetimes. After playing a major part in the conquest of North Africa, then Sicily, Patton was sidelined for nearly a year after the slapping incidents. During this time a disinformation campaign was put forth to convince the Nazis that Patton would command a non-existent army group that was to invade the south of France. A month after D Day Patton took command of the recently formed Third Army and drove across Europe, playing a pivotal role in the Battle of the Bulge.

In this book, Blumenson splices together the actual documents written by and about Patton as the actual events unfolded. Despite being an amalgamation of material from so many different sources, the book reads like a novel. Blumenson very rarely adds his own editorial commentary. This is done in a way that enhances the flow of the narrrative. My only complaint is that it frequently is difficult to determine where these asides begin and end. This readability is what makes the book great and unique. Having read many other biographies that over-analyze and inject the authors' personal opinion into the narrative it is refreshing to simply have the facts laid out in front of you.

Patton had an amusing tendency to give sarcastic nicknames to his rivals and adversaries. Omar Bradley is "the tentmaker," both for his Arab name and his tendency towards caution, Eisenhower is "divine destiny" for his political ambitions. General W. Bedell Smith, Eisenhower's hated chief of staff, is variously referred to as Beadle and Beetle. At the same time he is privately mocking these people, Patton takes great pains to praise and flatter them publicly. He even admits to himself in his diary that he is a shameless bootlicker and rear-end kisser when necessary. Patton justifies his actions because he feels he must be a sycophant to fulfill his destiny of leading men in battle. Patton even advises his son (who was a West Point Cadet at the time) that the way to advancement at the Academy is to seek out the Commandant and Superintendent and suck-up to them and their wives as much as possible.

I had low expectations for this book. Every other collection of the letters of famous men I have read has been interesting in spots but unreadable as a whole.Even the famous collected letters of Pliny the Younger are mostly dreary reports to the emperor and uninteresting notes to friends. For Blumenson to have created such an entertaining and informative document from similar material is a remarkable achievement.

A highly effective intellectual reference instrument.
I used this book while writing a paper for my Graduate level International Relations class. Although it is not considered a classic, it possess and delivers enormously relevant information regarding one of the greatest and most controversial master of war acknowledged in modern history. I commend this book as an pleasurable read, as well as an highly effective intellectual reference instrument.

Surprisingly readable and insighful
Although a fan of General Patton, I hesitated to purchase this book. The title indicated a daunting book for reference only, rather than one for reading. But one shouldn't judge a book by its cover; I was wrong. "The Patton Papers" is surprisingly readable, and a must for anyone who would seek to understand this American hero. From diary entries to personal letters, Martin Blumenson weaves a fascinating story that makes one feel one is a part of the Seventh and Third Army staff! I recommend that you read a biography first ("Patton: A Genius for War" is excellent) so that you have an overview of Patton's life. A word of caution: reading this book will dampen your enthusiasm for the movie "Patton," as it makes clear the multitude of historical inaccuracies. A really great book!

The Program for Better Vision: How to See Better in Minutes a Day Without Glasses or Contacts!

Vision improves more than 25%
When I started this program, my perscription was -4.75 in each eye with enough astigmatism that I had to wear glasses to correct it. Now, three months later, I wear contacts at -3.50 and no correction for astigmatism and am seeing 20/20. I have hope that someday I might not need lenses at all.

Really good book.
This book explains everthing about you eyesight and the way you can improve it. I recommend it.

Hooray for this book!
I don't wear glasses and want to keep it that way! I'm 36 and noticing problems when I'm reading. Mr. Sussman's book is inspiring and easy to understand. His program is simple to follow, but very effective. It really helped me "see" the psychological reasons behind my vision limitations (as well as ways to help myself) and also tought me about good eyesight habits that will keep me from needing glasses in the future. Thank you, Mr. Sussman, for such a practical and holistic program!

Rock Solid Golf: A Foundation for a Lifetime

Help Has Arrived
This is an easy to read complete review of what you need to know to play golf well. After reading the book I made some adjustments to my grip, stance and swing plane and, combined with some minor arm strengthening exercises, I have increased the distance I hit each club in my bag by at least 10 yards. Every serious golfer should read this book. Ted Turner.

Rock Solid Golf
This book is a golfers dream. A simple instructional book that covers all aspects of the game. The only book I have found that writes out a practice program for you and tells you how to find a teacher as well. Great read and well written.

Simple but powerful
Golf is sometimes so complicated that it's not worth all the expense and frustration, and other times so simple it's beautiful. Reading this book, I felt the feeling you get when working with a great teacher who simplifies (vs. complicates) the sport. There are some sections in this book that you don't find in others (fitness, how to find a teacher, and loads of quotes from great players) but the biggest help to me was the reveiw of the fundamentals. In the book, Rader wrote something about posture that I was off on - a quick fix (for me, it was bending at the hips) and I'm hitting it better than in the last five years. Go figure - 25 bucks to fix something my club pro would've charged 125 for...per session.

Roland Martin's 101 Bass-Catching Secrets
Published in Hardcover by New Win Publishing (July, 1989)
Authors: Roland Martin and Tim Tucker
Average review score:

One of the Greatest Bass Books Ever Written
I got a hold of this book when I was still wet behind the ears as far as bass fishing goes. I'm not a huge reader, but I couldn't put this book down. Roland talks about how to be observant and pick a pattern apart, including everything from lure color to presentation speeds. He really reveals it all when he's talking about these patterns. He gives the time of year, water temp, clarity, etc.

I gained a tremendous amount of confidence from reading this, as these are some of the patterns that earned him 9 B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year titles.

I've only been seriously fishing for about a year and there's no telling how many of these patterns I've used. I did skip over the parts on trolling and live bait, as they are not allowed in tournaments.

But an excellent book, as I refer to it over and over.

The Bible of Bass Fishing
Roland Martin has always been my favorite bass pro. He exudes a love of the sport and has an unquenchable thirst for fishing knowledge. And he shares it all in this book.

It is packed with the bass patterns that Roland has learned throughout his career. He explains which lure works best under a given situation and why. He covers shallow, heavy cover situations to deep structure, live bait to lures to fly fishing. If you love fishing for bass, buy this book!

Still The Best Guide To Largemouth Bass Fishing Success
Roland Martin's book is the best I've ever read, and is still timely today. It's like the Bible of Bassfishing to me. The thumbworn pages of my copy have guided me to fishing success time and again. WARNING: Do not loan this book to a friend. It will disappear.

The Treasury of Daniel
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (June, 2002)
Author: Martin Prine
Average review score:

Author Shares Stories, Blessings
"Know how to make a lion nervous? Put him in a den of Daniels."--Dr. Martin Prine. The lions of life come in every shape, form and fashion, and many Christians struggle every day to overcome them. Fort Smith native, Dr. Martin Prine had a calling a few years ago to help others with that struggle, by teaching a way to beat the lions that attack characters, relationships, health and finances.

"God wants everyone to know this, to use it. He wants everyone to have a real, true communion with Him and to know how to keep the glory of God in their lives," he said during a visit where he brought me a copy of his recently published book, "The Treasury of Daniel: Victory Over the Lions of Life." In the book, Dr.Prine, who grew up in Fort Smith, began his ministry in the Navy in 1972 and together with his wife, Dr. Barbara Lange Prine, founded King's Treasury Ministries in Houston, sets forth a prayer plan to teach anyone how to slay lions and succeed in their life.

"Every man, woman and child has the same privilege in prayer before God. This becomes exciting to those who come to Him with their petitions and learn He really hears them and grants their desires," he states in Chapter One. But the book clearly points out that success is not obtained by merely praying. First, you must learn exactly what prayer is. "Prayer then, is one thing...asking. It is seeking and asking for something from God, knocking on the door of His treasure house until it opens...no matter how long it takes, or how many times the petition is asked. It's as simple as that. Asking, and asking alone is prayer." He continues throughout the book to set forth criteria for prayer and explains historical and biblical accounts of it.

Dr. Prine shares how to be informed about the power of prayer. He lays out how large to ask of God, how to pray in His will, what to ask for, the difference between current and memorial prayer and why that principle is important in the success of prayer. He also explains why prayer must be asked in Jesus name and that, at times prayer is not answered merely because God will in his time and in his way.

The book also offers alternative reasons for some unanswered prayers. "Many Christians do not receive what they petition God for because they fail to ask for definite answers when they pray. They ask ordinary prayers He cannot answer, and since they do not ask specifically, they become discouraged and cease to ask at all," Dr. Prine states.

The author also makes it personal. He talks about friends and acquaintances touched by prayer, about learning to pray, being a young Christian and the blessings in his life due to prayer. He gives an interesting account of how he found time to pray in his prayer closet while aboard ship in the Navy, and how many others on the ship came to Christ as well. He tells of learning many years later when he least expected it, how lives were still being touched by the prayers he prayed aboard that ship. He also opens the book with a story of a farmer who came across George Washington deep in prayer in the winter of 1778 in Valley forge. It sets a powerful tone to the book.

"God asked me to write this book. Every chapter, every sentence, every word of this book was given to me by Him," Dr. Prine said during the interview. "The Lord did it. He made it possible. As you can see, it's our heartbeat. We hope it touches the live of others as well." With passion like that, it's hard not to find the book intriguing.

A Wonderful Book.
I simply could not put "The Treasury of Daniel" down. Dr. Prine has a wonderful way of explaining scriptural truths from the Bible which I found to be very inspiring. This is a very valuable book--money well spent! I'm telling my friends about it so they may also share in what I've learned. There really are secrets in God's word, and the author must have spent years in learning them. I also throughly enjoyed the life experiences he shares with his readers as he covers each chapter topic. Each one is different, awesome, and a jewel. This is great reading for every Christian. It is a privilege to recommend this exceptional work for God.

A MUST FOR EVERY CHRISTIAN LIBRARY
This author has touched the essence of the entire Christian experience--Prayer. Without it in the daily life of the Child of God, nothing but a shell is left. With it they can do great exploits. This is why we encounter so much spiritual oppostion when we become devoted to it. With so many addictions in the world today, wouldn't it be splendid if the Church became addicted to the one thing that really matters in life--calling on the one who loves us the most, and having the right relationship with Him?

Bro. Prine has rendered a great Christian service by also including in his book, valuable information concerning the Catholic Church; which I have long been concerned about. His has used solid research material, and makes a compelling case which should be throughly examined by anyone with a sincere desire for truth. I feel it is a worthy topic due to the media exposure given the problems within the Catholic faith at this time.

This book will give strength and understanding to anyone with a hunger for a closer walk with God. Without reservation, I recommend this extraordinary book.

The Shankill Butchers
Published in Paperback by Routledge (March, 1999)
Author: Martin Dillon
Average review score:

Enter life in Belfast in the 1970's
Want to understand the "Troubles"? How about delving deep into what it means to hate for hate's sake, to police that hate with little more than detective wits, and to strive to restore order to the seventh circle of Hell. Cops with hands tied and bound, criminals with nothing but blood on their minds, the logic of US Gangster crime fades in comparison to the ancient blood feud that finds no place or meaning today, yet policemen with distractions from politics and low pay and strained home lives push on in hopes of the beucholic Irish fireside of their childhood. Take sides if you want, everyone's a loser when the aim is simply death.

Vey Informative But Very Violent
Martin Dillon deserves great credit for writing this informative account of Lenny Murphy and his band of murdering thugs. It details the rise of Murphy as a school bully who`d rob classmates at knifepoint , how the Irish " Troubles " led to Murphy forming The Shankhill Butchers , the atrocities they commited , and The Butchers eventual downfall .

There is nothing to admire about secterian murder in Northern Ireland and reading this book it becomes quite clear that- Unlike consuming large amounts of alcohol- politics and religion did NOT play a big part in The Butchers lives , it was only an excuse to torture , mutilate and murder people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Courage also had no place in The Butchers lives , wait till you read about hardman William Moore trying to blame his accomplances for the murders.

My only complaint is that my edition is from 1990 and I`ve no idea if the author is planning to do a revised book. THE SHANKHILL BUTCHERS` possibly needs to be updated : Can the likes of Mr A , Mr B , etc now be named ? What happened to the likes of Moore after their release under the Good Friday agreement ? How are The Butchers regarded by people in Belfast nowadays ? As a footnote Robert " Basher " Bates was executed by the Ulster Freedom Fighters in the Summer of 1997

Belfast in a Time of Turmoil
This is one of those books which one finds hard to put down, but on the other hand many time has to stop and take a deep breath, during the reading!! It is written well with a great understanding of the issues in Belfast and The North. After one is finished it leaves a memory which is hard to erase. This is a must read for anyone on either side who is interested in the Irish/Ulster question.

Strength to Love
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins Publishers (29 August, 1977)
Author: Martin Luther King
Average review score:

A moving deliverance
Much like the effect that the dialogues of Plato these discourses help revive and make you relive the inspiring ideas and subsequent loving conclusions reached by Doctor King throughout his most formidible years.
I was literally glued to it as soon as the book was opened and read it passionately until the end. A master of allegorical and analogous metaphors, parallel to our lives and future lives.

Must read
I highly recommend the chapter on "loving your enemy".

A revolutionary vision of Christianity
Because of his inspiring leadership during the United States civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and because he was assassinated while serving in that capacity, Martin Luther King, Jr., has become an iconic figure in popular culture. And I fear that King the "legend" has become so big that people may be paying insufficient attention to King the writer. If you want to experience King's insight and power as a writer, read "Strength to Love." This collection of sermons is an excellent summation of the philosophy he developed as a Christian clergyman, social critic, and advocate for the African-American community.

Most of the sermons in the book begin with a Bible verse which ties in to the theme of each sermon. One of the main themes of the collection as a whole is King's passionate denunciation of racial prejudice and of the tangible injustice that springs from that phenomenon.

King is also very critical of those sectors of the Christian world that have historically used the Bible and Christian theology as tools for promoting slavery, American racial segregation, and South African apartheid. Indeed, in the sermon entitled "A knock at midnight" he refers to the Christian churches' historic support of racism as one of "the shameful tragedies of history." And he is also critical of those Black churches that have reduced Christianity to either a frenzied form of "entertainment" or a snobbish social club. These are hard words that contemporary Christians need to hear and heed.

King's own vision of Christianity is bold and revolutionary. And this vision is firmly grounded in the person of Jesus, whom he describes as "the world's most dedicated nonconformist." While strongly Christian, King is nonetheless respectful of the truths found in other religious traditions.

One fascinating sermon includes King's balanced critique of Communism. In another sermon, he praises Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, who greatly influenced King's philosophy of nonviolence. Ultimately, King's vision and compassion is vast: in "The man who was a fool," he writes, "All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality."

King's radicalism, his willingness to critique the failings of the Christian world, and his rejection of a rigidly fundamentalist style of Christianity have made him a target of ugly criticism from some more conservative Christians. (Consider, for example, author Paul McGlasson; in his 1994 book "Another Gospel" he condemns King as a "false prophet.") And I fear that others have tried to "sanitize" King's strong message. And that is why "Strength to Love" is such an important book. It is an important historical document of a critical era. And it is also a bold proposal of a Christian path that is compassionate, committed, and open to new truth.

Time Release
Published in Paperback by Jove Pubns (March, 1997)
Author: Martin J. Smith
Average review score:

Good Read
The title of Time Release gives a clue to its story. First, it concerns a killer who used pain relief capsules, as well as other techniques, to set off a series of poisonings. Second, it focuses on repressed memories and if, when and how they will come out. The author does a credible job with both themes, though I would have liked to have seen a little more interaction between Sonny and Christiansen in earlier therapy sessions, which would have provided a few more clues to the behavior of Sonny's family. Without this explanation, the climax came a little bit out of left field for me. The detective's confession to Christiansen came suddenly too, without much reason. These quibbles aside, the book was entertaining, with the major characters nicely drawn.

The suspense is excruciating.
I stole moments wherever I could find them to finish reading this book. The characters are well drawn, imperfect (like life is imperfect), but you also get involved with them, and want to know what happens to them. I could heap more praise on this book like everybody else has and repeat the same old words to describe it, but suffice to say that this is an excellent thriller. One that will hold your interest to the end. I've already bought his second book because I have to see what else this man can do with words.

An unorthodox mystery, set in an unusual locale.
If you like the TV series "Homicide," you'll want to read this book. The complex, unorthodox plot is told from the perspectives of three men--a washed-up cop, a troubled pyschologist, and the stoic son of a serial-murder suspect--each of whom harbors his own terrible secret. The three are locked in a desperate psychological tug of war, and only two of them will survive it. The characters are unglamorous, at times awkwardly imperfect, and utterly believable. Perhaps the best thing about "Time Release" is the sense of place. In the author's hands, the hard-edged gloom of rustbelt Pittsburgh becomes an oddly beautiful setting, and an apt metaphor for the torturous inner landscape of the protagonists.
